Using language of choice - avoiding secondary behaviours

This workshop helps staff to begin thinking about using appropriate language, including giving the student some choice of pathways

How will it help?

* By offering students some control over the situation/a choice
* By minimising conflict and opposition
* By developing language which has clear requirements and is presented in a reasonable manner

“It's a strange world of language in which skating on thin ice can get you into hot water”
Franklin P. Jones

“Discipline is not something I impose on you so I can control you. Rather, it is something you must develop within yourself so you can become the best person you can be, not the one who could have been”
Timothy F. Hough

Levelling responses - avoiding over reaction

This workshop helps separate presenting behaviours into low, medium, and high, and helps staff to respond appropriately whilst keeping emotional responses in check

How will it help?

* By providing more options
* By providing more flexibility
* By keeping things in perspective

“He who angers you conquers you”

Elizabeth Kenney

“Anyone can become angry - that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way; this is not easy”

Aristotle

Behave Yourself - strengths and struggles of different personalities

This workshop is focused on looking at the strength and struggles of the four main personality types and how they impact our relationships with each other and the children we work with.

How will it help?

* By taking a non-critical look at ourselves
* By celebrating our strengths and individuality
* By being aware of our struggles and potential conflicts

“An individual's self-concept is the core of his personality. It affects every aspect of human behaviour: the ability to learn, the capacity to grow and change. A strong, positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success in life.”

Dr. Joyce Brothers

From exit to re-entry - a supportive programme

This workshop develops an appropriate response to the student and staff in crisis, leading to a potential exit from the classroom.

How will it help?

* By providing support pathways for students and staff to take
* By providing secluded support area(s) away from the classroom
* By avoiding the need to escalate conflicts to gain compliance
* By enabling the repair and re-entry programme to take place as soon as possible - less time off-task
* By avoiding the need for the teacher to work alone in resolving issues

“One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency”
Arnold Glasgow

Building emotional literacy - through a “no surprise” environment

This workshop is focused on building a framework of responses within a set range and expectation. It is the start of unifying the team of staff towards the goal of supporting students and avoidance of conflict

How will it help?

* By showing staff they are part of a team
* By having a range of support available
* By allowing staff to see the effect of different contexts, subjects and personality styles
* By looking at emotional responses and their effects on relationships

Sanctions and rewards

This workshop helps staff to use effective sanctions and rewards in a supportive behaviour management style.

How will it help?

* By looking at appropriate sanctions, levelled to match the presenting behaviour
* By ensuring that sanctions are seen as an opportunity for student learning rather than a chance for teacher revenge
* By having a spectrum of responses and being flexible
* By making sure that rewards are achievable for all students
* By ensuring that records are kept to show even distribution and fairness to all students
* By developing a hierarchy of referral

Make my day - supporting students through challenging contexts

This workshop helps staff to manage the most difficult of students, particularly those for whom challenges may start even before arriving at school

How will it help?

* By looking at some of the contexts that students live in
* By considering the impact that a busy, challenging and sometimes inconsistent environment has on their ability to cope
* By building in flexibility and looking for a supportive angle
